Galvanic corrosion. When (for external application) we match stainless steel with other metals it is appropriate that they be separated by an non-metallic insulator. For example, including neoprene or nylon. Why do this? To avoid the risk of galvanic corrosion.
When the corrosion does?
Stainless steel is considered more noble than other materials such as:
- galvanized carbon steel (or not covered)
- zinc
- aluminum
In fact, in the presence of rainwater or humidity, stainless steel causes the corrosion of the less noble material. This doesn’t happen only if it is electrically separated.
Different materials. Different Sizes.
When the surface of stainless steel covers an area greater than that the less noble material (e.g. the coverings with anchors) we are seeing a corrosion acceleration of non-stainless fasteners.
So what does this mean? Accelerated corrosion may be followed by:
- the staining
- the reducing of union element section.
Some suggestions.
How to avoid these type of problems? You should always use stainless steel fasteners with stainless steel finishes.
