Sailboats – Circuit for Operating the Sails

Sailboats (or sailing boat) is a boat propelled partly or entirely by sails smaller than a sailing ship. In fact, the motor provides support action specifically during ports maneuvers. Indeed, the sailboats have a particular type of equipment on board.

The boom: what is this?

In sailing, a boom (see fig.1) is a spar (pole), along the foot (bottom edge) of a fore and aft rigged sail, that greatly improves control of the angle and shape of the sail. It can be made on wood, aluminum or carbon fiber. The primary action of the boom is to keep the foot of the sail flatter when the sail angle is away from the centerline of the boat. The boom also serves as an attachment point for more sophisticated control lines. Because of the improved sail control it is rare to find a non-headsail without a boom.

The forward end of the boom attaches to a mast just below the sail, with a joint called the gooseneck (see fig. 3). The gooseneck pivots allowing the other end of the boom to move freely. The clew (back corner) of the sail attaches to the free end of the boom (see fig. 6). The entire foot of the sail may be attached to the boom or just the clew. If the foot is not attached to the boom, the rig is known as loose footed.

Circuits for operating the sails: what is connected to the boom.

A boom will frequently have these additional sail control lines attached.

  • Outhaul:

– a line which is part of the running rigging of a sailboa

– used to extend a sail and control the shape of the curve of the foot of the sail.

  • Sheet (see fig. 7):

– a line (rope, cable or chain) used to control the movable corners (clews) of a sail.

  • Boom vang (see fig. 8):

– a line or piston system on a sailboat

– used to exert downward force on the boom and thus control the shape of the sail.

  • Reef earing (see fig. 5):

– one or more ropes

– allow to reduce the sail size, in other words “to reef”.
