Bonding and Welding of Stainless Steel. Stainless steel can be fixed to other materials by various modes. Each mode in turn has unique characteristics.


Some information about the bonding.

In fact, stainless steel can be fixed to other materials by adhesive as:

  • Epoxy resins
  • Acrylic resins
  • Polyurethane resins

Choosing the most appropriate adhesive to be used depends on many factors. Which ones?

  • The material that will be fixed with stainless steel
  • The environmental conditions of the artifact
  • Type of load to bear

Some more information. Generally, a rough finish helps the adhesive but may need a stainless steel pretreatment. But which one? The pretreatment operations are different. Here are a few examples:

  • degreasing
  • the use of abrasives
  • the application of chemical primers.

Although modern adhesives suffer less surface residues or humidity.



The welding of stainless steel.

Stainless steel is readily welded both another stainless steel or carbon steel.

However, to reduce the risk of deformation, during the welding operation account should be taken of these stainless steel than carbon factors:

  • the greater coefficient of thermal expansion
  • the lower thermal conductivity of the material (especially austenitics ones)

But what are the welding processes suited to stainless steel?

  • TIG (tungsten inert gas)
  • plasma arc
  • MIG (metal electrode with protective gas)
  • resistance (common for the panels that not create superficial alteration)
