Generally, every store sells different qualities of metallic materials as carbon and alloy steel and, also, stainless steel. Under these conditions, specific procedures are necessary to prevent any deterioration of the materials. In fact, mechanical damage and other common defects are among the main causes of rust formation.
How do you do it?
It is necessary to protect stainless steel products with plastic coating. This way are avoided
- scratches or dents;
- contact with non-stainless materials
kaging of carbon steel are used you must isolate them. Also, they should not come into contact with the surfaces of stainless material.
This technique allows the preservation of the finishing and polishing carried out during the production process.
Different types of metals must be stored according to their material family (e.g. carbon steel with carbon steel, austenitic stainless steel with austenitic stainless steel, etc.) in order to prevent:
- direct contamination caused by contact;
- contamination caused by the deposition of iron particles.
Furthermore, it is necessary to:
- cover all forks, chains, carts, and handling equipment with rubber, plastic, or wood;
- use textile ropes or straps instead of steel chains for lifting and lashing operations;
- thoroughly decontaminate all equipment (e.g. tools, shears, presses, conveyor surfaces, etc.) that has previously come into contact with carbon steel, in order to remove residual iron particles before using it with stainless steel.
Operators must not step on stainless steel sheets or bars with dirty soles contaminated by:
- grease;
- metallic powders or residues from other steel categories.
If, during the preparation of bundles or packages, steel strapping is used for packing operations, appropriate protection must be applied to avoid direct contact with stainless steel surfaces.
