Today we want to talk about the threading process, and in particular about taps and tap wrenches.
What are taps and tap wrenches?
Tap (male) consist of a cylindrical body with straight or helical grooves that separate the combs groove rope.
Tap wrenches are tools for tapping manual. They have two arms that allow the rotation by hand. (see figure)

How do you thread cutting?
This is done in a progressive manner. Indeed, each comb makes a conoid which has:
- At the end the base diameter of thread
- And it ends with the diameter of the top of thread

1. Entrance area is the most interested in shavings removal while the rest of the male has the leading role. Consequently:
- the longer the conical part of the entrance
- the smaller the shave section excised from each individual tooth. (less extreme shearing stress)
2. Hole diameter by tapping must be slightly greater than the core diameter of the screw. (Indeed, tapping tends to form the burr that clogs the bottom of thread)
What types of taps are there?
For small diameter holes and for metals with high hardness 3 taps (males) are used:
- Roughing tool (that the 50% of the chip came from)
- Intermediate tool (that the 30% of the chip came from)
- Finisher tool (that the 20% of the chip came from)

Also, depending on the shape of the tap (male), there may be different types of chips:
- Straight or helical grooves
- Simple thread or alternate
- Spiral point
- Etc.
