The allowable bearing pressure for a given material cannot be defined with absolute precision. Several factors play a key role in determining it:

  • The manufacturing process
  • The material’s fiber orientation
  • The surface finish
  • Temperature variations

Bearing pressure can be reduced by adopting the following measures:

  • Using flange bolts
  • Using flange nuts
  • Chamfered holes (which can increase the allowable bearing pressure by up to 20%)
  • Through holes according to ISO 273 (fine series)

The main advantages include:

  • Reduced settling of the joint
  • Better retention of the assembly preload
  • Larger and more cost-effective hole tolerances
  • Improved resistance to vibration compared to standard bolts and nuts
  • Fewer fastening elements required
  • Faster assembly

Using flanged fasteners is generally a more effective solution than using large washers placed under standard bolts and nuts.
