It’s grape harvest time in Italy! Stainless steel is a basic material for wine-making systems and breweries.

For the design and construction of tanks and wine storage facilities it is usually chosen AISI 304 stainless steel austenitic, as this type of steel is specific for food use (even better if accompanied by a certificate of origins!).

Why do we choose stainless steel? First of all, for its cleanliness; in fact, this material is non-toxic. Second, for its corrosion resistance. Finally, for its property of maintaning an even temperature. These are all qualities that make it perfect for a prolonged liquid storage. Still or sparkling wine, good things come in stainless steel packages!

Let me give you a couple of examples:

  • Pressure tanks – for the production of Spumante
  • Yeast or essence tanks
  • Tank farm
  • Mixer
  • Fermenter

All these items must be strictly made in stainless steel precisely to allow an effective fermentation process and, above all, to achieve an excellent wine quality. Indeed, wine tanks will be equipped with accessories, also in stainless steel.

  • Valve couplings;
  • Full passage ball valve
  • Eyebolts

In fact, the quality of the accessories is important to maintain high performance.

 Your customer is a vineyard owner, and his vineyard is located in a maritime area. What would you recommend him? It should be pointed out that in enviornments with salty air it is recommended austenitic stainless steel. Specifically, the AISI 316 that cointains Cr (Chromium), Ni (Nickel) and 2% of Mo (Molybdenum). This type of stainless steel is particularly suitable to resist:

  • The corrosion of the reaction compounds in the cycle of production and maturation of wines
  • Saltawater corrosion from the external environment.
