This is the second article dedicated to the proper maintenance of stainless steel surfaces. Following the recommendations of the Italian Stainless Steel Development Association, here are some important guidelines on which tools and products should be avoided during cleaning and maintenance operations.
Tools to Avoid
The following tools should not be used on stainless steel surfaces:
- abrasive sponges, brushes, or discs made from metals or alloys other than stainless steel (such as carbon steel, aluminum, brass, etc.)
- tools previously used on other metals or alloys
These materials may scratch the surface and cause contamination, resulting in unsightly stains or streaks.
Tools to Use with Caution
Stainless steel brushes and sponges can be used, as they do not contaminate the surface. However, they should still be used carefully in order to avoid scratching or damaging the finish.
Acids and Chemicals to Avoid
The following substances should never be used on stainless steel:
- hydrochloric acid (muriatic acid)
- vapours containing hydrochloric acid, such as those produced during floor cleaning
- bleach
It is also advisable to avoid cleaners containing chlorides, unless exposure times are very short and followed by thorough rinsing with plenty of water.
Avoid Abrasive Powder Detergents
Powdered abrasive cleaners should also be avoided, as they may damage the aesthetic appearance of the surface finish, especially on satin-finished or polished stainless steel.
Other Products to Avoid
Products designed for cleaning silver are not recommended for stainless steel surfaces, as they may alter or damage the protective finish.
