The finishing steel mills are the basis of the conditions of supply for all stainless steel flat products. The finishing are essential in reference to the appearance of the surface as well as on the material behavior towards the environment. In that respect, you also have to choose them carefully.

The mechanical polishing and brushing

Both finishes involve the use of abrasive materials. These affect the surface of the steel up to a certain depth. How to choose unidirectional finishes?

First, you can choose from a wide range, depending on the:

  • Original stainless steel surface
  • Type and texture of abrasive belts and brushes
  • Nature of the process of polishing used.

The mechanical finishes

The mechanical finishes can be performed:

  • with lubrication (emery with oiled side): they create a particular shining finishes with low roughness
  • dry (grit tape or fibre brushes): they create a satin effect.

What are the differences?

  • Finishes with lubrication:
    • smoother
    • easier to maintain consistency from batch to batch
    • slightly higher cost
    • the supplier may be asked a minimum quantity of supply
  • Dry finishes:
    • less smooth
    • difficult to maintain consistency from batch to batch

Some example

Below there are some examples.

1. Uniform and unidirectional surface with low reflectivity.

2. Surface obtained with abrasive belts (or brushes). Unidirectional, non-reflective and suitable for interior applications in architecture.

3. Smooth and reflective surface. The steel is suitable for many applications in architecture (resistance to weather conditions)
4. Mirror surface with high reflectivity. It is ultra-smooth, polished and brush up afterwards with a soft rag and polishing compounds.
