The stainless steel fittings are commonly used in industrial equipment. The main sectors are food, chemical, pharmaceutical and water treatment plants. Above all, where the use of plastic fittings is not recommended.
Food industry and stainless steel fittings
The needs of the food sector are manifold, having strict and specific rules for the choice of materials. The main factor is the hygienic one. In fact, cleaning is the basis of plants for the food industries. The choice of fittings material to be used in this type of plants, therefore, is not to be underestimated. The resistance of the material is also fundamental. Fittings, for example, can be used in plant cooling tubes, while for the passage of food, polished internally fittings are employed.
Fittings for chemical-pharmaceutical and petrochemical industries
In addition to the food industry, stainless steel fittings are also used in plants in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries. As with the food industry, these types of materials are chosen for their hygiene caractheristics. For parts in contact with drugs, cosmetics and more, the use of fittings with finishes at extremely low roughness levels is essential. In the construction of refinery, oil, chemical and biochemical plants, for example, the conditions of use of stainless steel are extremely intensive. This is due to the particular aggressiveness of the fluids that are treated and also to the high operating temperatures. Stainless steel fittings, therefore, are the most suitable products in order to avoid breakages and extraordinary maintenance due to corrosive phenomena.
Stainless steel fittings in aviation sector
Stainless steel fittings are also often used in the aeronautical field. Pipes can be employed as:
- air intakes for engine power pipes
- air lines of the air circuits of the on-board systems
- pipes to accommodate the electrical system lines
- fuel or plumbing lines
The pipes can be “rigid” or “flexible” depending on the use. The need to install complex lines of piping and equipment in confined spaces (and through specific counters) requires the use of specific hydraulic fittings, in addition to the use of storage systems for piping such as hose and pipe clamps, sealing washers (alias o-rings).
