Carabiners. What are they?

Carabiners are an incomplete metal rings. In fact, this allows the opening and closing of them. The carabiner can be of different forms, but always presents an opening element by means of a lever. In some cases, this lever cane be stop by a ring nut. In Italian and EU regulations, the term “carabiners” is replaced by the more correct term “connector“.

Why use the carabiners?

Carabiners, unlike D-shackles, are designed to be opened instantly. For example, the sailor must be able to open the carabiner without much effort, even when the latter is subjected to traction. For this reason it is often used for sports such as climbing, mountaineering, paragliding, speleology and watersports generally.

A bit about the history of carabiners

The carabiners is created around 1800. The main use was the quick-closing of rifle bandoleer¹. Carabiners were used in other areas such as agriculture, jewellery-making and nautical, in subsequent years. In addition, others daily use the carabiners. For example: the firefighters and climbing enthusiasts.

 

¹A bandolier or a bandoleer is a pocketed belt for holding ammunition. It was usually slung sash-style over the shoulder, with the ammunition pockets across the midriff and chest.
