Stainless steel can be joined to other materials using different methods, each with its own characteristics and advantages.
Bonding Stainless Steel
Stainless steel can be bonded to other materials using several types of adhesives, including:
- Epoxy resins
- Acrylic resins
- Polyurethane resins
Choosing the most suitable adhesive depends on several factors, such as:
- The material being joined to the stainless steel
- The environmental conditions in which the finished product will operate
- The type of load or stress the joint must withstand
In general, a rough surface finish improves adhesive performance, although stainless steel often requires proper surface preparation before bonding.
Common pretreatment operations include:
- Degreasing
- Abrasive treatment
- Application of chemical primers
Modern adhesives are generally less sensitive to surface contamination and humidity than older products, but proper preparation still helps ensure stronger and more durable bonds.
Welding Stainless Steel
Stainless steel can be readily welded both to other stainless steels and to carbon steel.
However, during welding it is important to consider some specific properties of stainless steel in order to reduce the risk of distortion and deformation. Compared with carbon steel, stainless steel has:
- A higher coefficient of thermal expansion
- Lower thermal conductivity, especially in austenitic grades
These characteristics can lead to greater heat distortion if not properly controlled during the welding process.
The following welding methods are commonly used for stainless steel:
- TIG welding (Tungsten Inert Gas)
- Plasma arc welding
- MIG welding (Metal Inert Gas)
- Resistance welding, commonly used for sheet panels because it minimizes surface alterations
