Stainless steel rings have a wide range of applications in the marine industry. Their use mainly depends on the type of stainless steel they are made from. The grades AISI 304 and AISI 316 refer to austenitic stainless steels containing generally more than 16% chromium and more than 6% nickel as the second main alloying element.
AISI 316 and AISI 304: what are the differences?
AISI 304 stainless steel is commonly used for kitchen equipment, sinks, cutlery, and similar applications. In contrast, AISI 316 stainless steel is the most suitable choice for marine environments. This is because AISI 316 contains approximately 2–3% molybdenum, which provides greater resistance to chloride corrosion.
For this reason, it is widely used in the shipbuilding industry.
AISI 316 stainless steel welded rings: how are they used?
AISI 316 stainless steel welded rings are commonly used in diving equipment. In particular, they are used together with harness webbing. They are also suitable for fastening ropes, chains, shackles, or other equipment requiring an attachment point such as an eye or a D-ring.
AISI 304 stainless steel welded rings: other applications
AISI 304 stainless steel welded rings are also used in many everyday applications, including shower curtains, household curtains, costume jewellery, and clothing accessories. AISI 304 stainless steel split rings are also commonly used as key rings.
Cotter rings can replace traditional split pins where there is limited space or restricted access, for example on boats. They are also preferred where a conventional split pin could create a protruding part that might cause injury.
