How To Blacken Stainless Steel?

Posted on

Blackening of stainless steel is achieved thanks to immersion in suitable oxidizing solutions at a temperature of 120/130° C.

Why to blacken metals?

Primarily it is necessary to color metal of black in a totally opaque, smooth, shiny or satin. Or to not influence the size of blackening components (important characteristic for precision mechanics).

What metals can you blackening?

The metals that can be subjected to blackening are:

  • Iron
  • Cast iron
  • Steel
  • Stainless steel (Nerinox)
  • Ferrous materials

And what the metal pieces are?

  • cutting tools and blades for cutters
  • tool holders
  • measuring instruments
  • wheels
  • hand tools
  • buttons and metal capsules for clothing
  • automotive components (e.g. brakes, exhaust pipes etc..)
  • furniture hinges and handles
  • mechanical components
  • small metal products (e.g. washers, wheels etc..)
  • screws of all sizes and types (e.g. nuts, washers, set screws, pins etc..)
  • components of graphic machines (used in typography)
  • weapons and collectibles

What is the stainless steel blackening process?

As a rule, the process of blackening on stainless steel parts is expected to:

  • aesthetic reasons (e.g. when you want to get a black coloration)
  • the increase of corrosion resistance.

As mentioned above the blackening of stainless steel is achieved by immersion in oxidizing solutions at a temperature of 120/130°C. The thickness of the layer of blackening (consisting of oxides) has a value about 0.1 mcron. It doesn’t affect the size of the treated parts. But what determines the gloss blackened sheet? The degree of preparation of the surface below. What increases the corrosion resistance? Final oiling treatment with emulsifiable oil. This treatment by blackening of stainless steel (FIAT 9.57451) is called BLACK STEEL. Note that in the treatment of blackening of BLACK STEELS are not used dangerous substances as lead, quicksilver, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls, polybrominated diphenyl ethers.
