This is the first of two articles dedicated to the proper maintenance of stainless steel surfaces. Below are some useful recommendations provided by the Italian Stainless Steel Development Association.
Limescale Deposits
To remove light limescale deposits use:
- a standard all-purpose cleaner
- a soft cloth
For heavier deposits:
- leave the surface to soak in a solution of hot water and vinegar (approximately 1 part vinegar to 4 parts water)
- then rinse using a solution of water and baking soda
- rinse again with clean water
- finally, dry the surface thoroughly
Oil and Grease Stains
For ordinary stains:
- use a detergent diluted in hot water
- rinse with clean water
- dry with a soft cloth or paper towel
For stubborn stains:
- use ethyl alcohol, acetone, or another suitable solvent
Fingerprints
Fingerprints can be removed in two different ways:
- using a mild liquid detergent diluted in water
- gently wiping the surface with a soft microfiber cloth and a glass cleaner
Heat Marks and Burn Marks
To remove heat marks or discoloration caused by flames:
- use a soft cloth together with a cream cleaner suitable for household stainless steel surfaces
- rinse thoroughly with clean running water
- dry with a soft cloth
Coffee and Tea Stains
To remove coffee or tea stains:
- dissolve baking soda in boiling water
- leave the solution to soak for approximately 15 minutes
- rinse carefully with clean water
- dry with a soft cloth
Surface Scratches
Minor scratches can be treated using:
- a detergent specifically designed for stainless steel
- alternatively, a stainless steel polishing product
Always use a soft cloth and follow the grain of the steel surface during cleaning.
Burnt Grease and Stubborn Dirt
For burnt grease or particularly stubborn dirt:
- use a cream cleaner suitable for stainless steel household surfaces
- apply with a soft cloth
- rinse thoroughly after cleaning
Rust Stains and Surface Contamination
Rust stains on stainless steel are often caused by contamination from contact with carbon steel or other oxidizing materials.
To remove them:
- rinse thoroughly with clean water
- use specific stainless steel cleaning products designed for rust removal
