How can you join the ends of two ropes or create an eye at the end of a rope? There are two common methods: tying a knot or making a splice. Below is a brief guide to rope splicing using a hand swager.
How to Make a Splice
A splice is created by interweaving the strands of a rope or wire rope back into itself or into another rope. There are several splicing techniques, depending on the type of rope and its intended application.
For example, a traditional sailor’s splice (such as an eye splice) is made by weaving the rope strands together. This technique is commonly used with natural fibre ropes, although different methods are available for synthetic and steel wire ropes.
Splices can be made on textile ropes as well as wire ropes and are commonly used for halyards, sheets, mooring lines, and many other marine applications.
Why Make a Splice?
A splice offers several advantages over a knot. It can be used to create secure eyes for halyards, mooring lines, lifting applications, and other onboard uses, including decorative ropework and fenders.
One of the main benefits of a properly made splice is that it retains significantly more of the rope’s original strength than a knot. In many cases, a spliced eye can withstand nearly twice the load of a comparable knot, making it the preferred choice whenever maximum strength and reliability are required.
